Strangely
enough, the man that made the first marketable motor cycle is actually better known for
his pioneering development of the motor car. Born in Wurtemberg in 1834, GOTTLIEB DAIMLER
had much of his early engineering experience at the Whitworth works in Manchester,
England. However in 1872 he moved back to Germany to join N.A. OTTO. of Cologne in the
production of an internal combustion gas engine. In 1885 he made the first motor cycle
when he installed his lightweight petrol engine into the frame of a bicycle. In 1886, the
motor cycle went on sale alongside his first motor vehicle. It was later that he joined
forces with KARL BENZ to become one of the pioneers of the high speed four stroke petrol
engine. He died in 1900.
